Project template variants are here
You can now save variants of any project template — different "shapes" of the same project type that live alongside each other in the new-project picker. The classic Charlie Jones use case: instead of bending one bathroom remodel template to cover every size of job, save Small Bathroom Remodel, Medium Bathroom Remodel, and Large Bathroom Remodel as distinct variants and pick the right one when you create the project.
How it works
On any project template's detail page (Catalog → Project Templates → pick a type), you'll see a new + Create variant action in the toolbar. The modal asks for:
- An optional Size tag — Small / Medium / Large
- An optional Scope tag — Full demo / Refresh only / With expansion
- An optional Finish level tag — Standard / Premium / Luxury
- A free-form Other qualifier for anything the structured tags don't cover
- An optional explicit name override
Pick the combinations that matter for your business. The variant is saved with a name like "Full Bathroom Remodel — Small, Premium" (or whatever you typed), with the parent's lines deep-copied as the starting point. After creation you land on the variant's editor, ready to tune the lines.
Why this matters in project creation
When you (or anyone on your team) clicks + New Project, the project-type dropdown now has a Your custom types group right alongside Standard project types. Type "bathroom remodel" and you'll see all your variants listed together with the standard ones — pick the right one in one click.
The scope draft anchors on the variant's lines, so the proposal starts from the shape that matches the job. No more "good, but I always knock 30% off because this is the small version" mental overhead.
What variants don't change
- Measurements work the same as the parent type — variants inherit the parent's measurement spec.
- Biddy treats the project as the parent category (with the variant's name surfaced for context) — measurement tools and scope reasoning work unchanged.
- Editing a variant doesn't touch the parent, and editing the parent doesn't propagate to variants. They're independent siblings.
